AFRICAN-AMERICAN AWARENESS PATCH
To enhance the awareness of African-American History and culture.
Brownies: Complete 6 requirements, including the 4 starred.
Juniors: Complete 9 requirements, including the 4 starred.
Cadettes & Ambassadors: Complete 12 requirements, including the 4 starred.
Upon completion of the requirements, fill out the African-Awareness Patch Application form and mail to council office.
Check with Field Notes for the dates of any African-American Awareness patch workshops.
- *Use your local travel agent, the library, and GSUSA resources to explore a country in Africa. Find out about its people, holiday,. foods, customs, and dress. Do they have Girl Scouts or Girl Guides? OR
Many Africans were brought to the West Indies during the slave trade. Explore an island in the West Indies. Find out about its people, holidays, foods, customs, and dress. Do they have Girl Scouts or Girl Guides?
- *Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. was a civil rights leader. When was his actual birthday and when do we celebrate his birthday? List some of the contributions he made to history. In what way could you celebrate his birthday?
- Make a collage, drawing, or diorama showing multi-cultural people living in peace with each other.
- The March on Washington took place in August, 1963. What was its purpose and what did it accomplish?
- Listen to jazz, calypso, and gospel music. Where did they originate?
- With others, make up a rhyme or song about something that happened at your troop meeting or camp. Share your musical creation with a younger troop, parents, or senior citizens group.
- *Interview someone who has knowledge about African-American history. This person could be a celebrity such as an actor, actress, dancer or storyteller., OR
Attend an African-American cultural program such as a play, library exhibit, or concert, OR Read a book about African-American history. Discuss the story with your troop.
- Make up a game or use the packet resources to help younger children learn about African-American history.
- Collect pictures and/or stories from newspapers and magazines about apartheid in South Africa. What is apartheid? Discuss apartheid with your troop.
- What black South African leader won a Nobel prize? Find out what he did.
- Cook a dish of African-American origin and share it with others.
- *Learn about two outstanding black people involved in the world of the arts, the out of doors, the world of today and tomorrow, the world of well being and the world of people.
- Find out about a black service organization in your community and invite a representative to your troop meeting. ( Check with Council)
