FOOD PATCH/I CAN HELP
Patch activities are either for all four age levels, or are coded in bold as B, J, C, A, or ALL.
- B,J (A) Visit a food pantry, soup kitchen or other group in your community that feeds the hungry.
C,A (B) Volunteer your services to help distribute food to hungry people. Contact FOOD PATCH at 741-1300 or your local distribution pantry.
All
- Design a display and exhibit it at your school, church or synagogue on hunger in Westchester and Putnam counties. Describe ways people can help.
All
- Participate in organizing and collecting canned food for the hungry. Collect at least one day’s food supply for a family of four.
All
- (A) Plan a one-week menu for yourself. Make sure it is a balanced diet using the four basic food groups and add snacks for each day.
J,C,A
- (B) Now, check the costs of the foods you have chosen. List your food budget for one week. Compare this with what a family of four would have to spend. Explain what “recommended dietary allowances” or “USRDA” means.
B,J,C
- Divide the foods you eat into the four major food groups with an “I and what I eat” collage. Identify the five major nutrients and explain how they help your body grow.
J,C,A
- Write an essay on nutrition and explain why it makes sense to adopt good eating habits at an early age.
J,C,A
- Conduct a classroom or school-wide poll to survey eating habits and attitudes toward nutrition. Share your results with your troop.
All
- (A) To better understand hunger, play the “World Food Game”. Divide a box of raisins so that one girl gets the majority of the raisins, four girls get a smaller quantity, two girls get a couple and the rest of the girls get nothing. Now discuss the following:
- How does this make you feel?
- Were the raisins divided fairly?
- How did you feel about the number you received?
- Why shouldn’t every girl be given the same number of raisins?
C,A
(B) Be an advocate and develop a plan that would eliminate hunger. Send your ideas to legislators who can help make a difference in combating hunger.
