SPECIAL EDITION PATCH (NEWSPAPERS)

 

Complete 6 requirements including #1 and the 3 starred ones.

 

1.        Subscribe weekly to your local newspaper.  Get the “50 Fun Things to do with the Newspaper” cards.

Contact Council for the cards. Do some activities from each of the different categories.

*2    Put together your own troop newspaper.  Assign jobs for the paper according to each person’s talents or interests.  There can be reporters, advertisers, cartoonists and photographers.  Have each one submit her work for the paper.  Stories , crossword puzzles, book and movie reviews should also be submitted.  Give your paper a catchy name. Share your finished work with others. If possible have your newspaper duplicated and send one copy to :

*3    Read and comment on different articles in the daily newspaper,  Is there an article you really liked or disliked?  Share your views with others.  Write to the editor of the paper and express your reactions to the article.

 

4.        Many articles come from interviews. An interview is a series of questions you ask someone. What are some good questions for an interview?  Write 5 questions to be used in an interview.  Try interviewing your troop leader and the girls in your troop. Interview  some people in your community and write an article on these people from the things you found out in their interviews.

 

5.        The newspaper is divided into sections.  What are they and what types of information are found in them?

 

6.        Imagine you have your own business.  How would you advertise it?  Would you only use words, have pictures, or both?  Is there a slogan or theme you can use to attract the reader’s attention. OR Create an advertisement for Girl Scouting.

 

7.        Collect different types of newspapers.  Try to find newspapers from different countries or ones written in another language or Braille.  What are the newspapers’ similarities and differences?

 

*8    List the various jobs found at a newspaper,  Which ones interest you the most?  What are the duties of the different types of jobs you discover?  Next, arrange to visit a newspaper plant.  Take along your list.  How many of the various jobs and the people holding them did you meet?

 

8.        The Food Section: Try out some of the recipes found in this section of the newspaper.  Submit a troop recipe to your local paper.
