Alcohol/Chemical Dependency Awareness Patch

 

Instructions

                Brownies and Juniors must complete 8 requirements including the 5 starred.

                Cadettes and Seniors must complete 10 requirements including the 5 starred and those specifically for Cadettes and Seniors.

 

Requirements

      *1.     Read a book, see a film, or attend a play that deals with alcohol/chemical dependency awareness.

 

2.        Visit an alcohol/Chemical dependency rehabilitation facility.  When contacting the facility ask if they will do a self-awareness session with your group on the effects of alcohol/chemical dependencies.

 

    *3.     Interview a therapist or counselor from an organization that is concerned with alcohol/chemical dependency   

              awareness.

 

      4.     Visit or write to the National Council on Alcoholism, Westchester, Inc. for information on the services they   

                provide.

 

         *5.   Find out about five services or organizations within your community that are involved with the problems of        

                alcohol/chemical dependencies.

 

6.        Create a poster or display that depicts the effects of alcohol/chemical abuse.

 

7.        Discover how alcohol/chemical abuse is covered by the media.

a.        Clip and collect newspaper and magazine articles about alcohol/chemical abuse for a scrapbook.

b.        Clip and collect advertisements that feature alcoholic beverages.  Discuss with your troop what these advertisements are saying.

 

        8*.   Invite a speaker from Alcoholics Anonymous, Alateen, or Al-Anon to a troop or group meeting.

 

9.        (For Cadettes and Seniors only) Visit an open meeting of AA and be ready to talk about this with your troop.

 

 

10.     (For Cadettes and Seniors only) Interview a guidance counselor or youth counselor to find out what services your school provides for students concerning dependency problems or awareness.

 

11.     (For Cadettes and Seniors only) Be an advocate.  List five plans that can help reduce alcohol or drug impaired driving and implement one plan.

 

 

12.     Compile information you have learned from working on this patch program and share your knowledge with another group.

 

      *13.   Discuss the Girl Scout Promise and Law in relation to this patch.  Write a paragraph or two on your thoughts 

                and mail to your council office.
